John Brown was hero to some and a dastardly evil person to others. Did he cause the Civil War to begin as has been said? And what is the connection to Langston Hughes?

Brown’s  life and controversy inspired artists to write and to paint about his impact on American history. The poet,  Stephen Vincent Benet,  wrote John Brown’ Body, a poem. It was published in 1927 and 1928. A special edition, illustrated by John Steuart Curry, was published by The Heritage Press in 1948. Additional material is included in this 454 page volume.

A current analysis of artists’ depictions of Brown may be found on the Artinfo blog:

Who knew?
Langston Hughes‘ grandmother was married first to Lewis Sheridan Leary, a man who fought with John Brown at Harpers Ferry. Two citations are in a biography of Langston Hughes:

The trial of John Brown and his men can be followed on the following website. It also includes art work and a bibliography.
