The artist does not always have control of the medium. When unexpected images enter like ghosts from the past, do you save them or push them back from view? This painting began
to acknowledge those who had cared enough to send flowers to the living. The promise to “do something artistic” with these stately stems and petals was a personal one. Whoever told of shocking red roses with ice cubes in the water and then removing the water did no favor. The hardened stems and still colorful petals seemed destined for eternity. Every rose does not need to be kept. Not every branch of fall leaves must stand the test of time.
The artist painting the House of Dead Flowers had hoped to let the sunshine in on living things. It was surprising to be visited by the women representing generations of guardian-spirits.
I knew their names and faces. They were the strong ones. We bear their genes.
I know know my grandmother’s hands when I look at mine.
